The Doorstep: Beijing Rules, with Bethany Allen

As Joe Biden and Xi Jinping met in San Francisco last week, Axios China reporter Bethany Allen joined Senior Fellows Nikolas Gvosdev and Tatiana Serafin on The Doorstep podcast for a virtual talk on her new book Beijing Rules.

While much of the discussion focused on China’s “authoritarian economic statecraft” and why that’s a threat to Western democracies, Allen pointed out that there has been a positive shift recently in "this important bilateral relationship.” “I think Xi recognizes that he cannot continue to allow ‘wolf warrior’ diplomacy and the same kind of hard edge he adopted in recent years,” said Allen. As the two nations grapple with global issues, like the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, climate change, and the rise of AI, this dialogue is vital for national and global security.
